Yesterday I went for a long walk up and down the Goderich beach and hills at Lake Huron.
- Sun beating down on the hot sand and boardwalk
- whining kids
- ah.... the sweet smell of sunscreen lotion
- sand all over the place, including waistlines and car floors
- drivers not watching for pedestrians
Maybe that's enough communing with nature that way. I'll either have to be there earlier or look for other places to walk.
In the neighbourhood where I grew up near Lake Michigan, none of the houses and only a few of the businesses had air conditioning. On hot summer days, it was a real treat for the neighbourhood kids if one of the moms had access to the family car and could drive us all to the beach to cool off.
Nowadays, that's not such a strong reason to go to the beach. Libraries and businesses all have air conditioning, as do many/most homes. If I want to cool off and be comfortable, it's easier to stay home.
I realize there are other reasons that some people might want to go to the beach, but they aren't very persuasive for me.

From an e-mail:
"Yeah, I took the kids to the beach yesterday. We had a GREAT time. You'd have just loved this weird old guy who kept walking past and sneering at everyone. You have to wonder why guys like that just don't stay home."
So at least you agree about something.
