As I prepare for a return visit to Herstmonceux Castle to teach economics again this summer, it is only fitting that I continue posting about men's facilities in the UK (see here and here, for example).
When I visited Battle Abbey, I learned that this very attractive arched wing in the foreground of this photo was actually the monks' "facilities". Downwind and with the proper drainage. Noviates were expected to clean out the more solid matter from below, while the "thrones" were on the upper level.
