Ms. Eclectic mails things to her family on a regular basis, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I sent anything via the Postal Service. I pay bills on-line, I correspond on-line, and I place orders for things on-line. I think the last time I actually sent something via the post was when I sent souvenirs to my family from England last spring.
Lots of other people are like me, I guess. As a result of these technological changes, we send less mail, and we especially use fewer postal drop boxes*. Here is a set of graphs that make this point (from yesterday's WaPo):
*In our town, there is one mail drop box. It is at the post office. But we all go there nearly every day anyway to pick up our mail. We have no home mail delivery in our small town, and never have had it.
