Ms. Eclectic mails things to her family on a regular basis, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I sent anything via the Postal Service. I pay bills on-line, I correspond on-line, and I place orders for things on-line. I think the last time I actually sent something via the post was when I sent souvenirs to my family from England last spring.
Lots of other people are like me, I guess. As a result of these technological changes, we send less mail, and we especially use fewer postal drop boxes*. Here is a set of graphs that make this point (from yesterday's WaPo):
