No, I haven't taken aftenoon tea in Hong Kong. I've never even been to Hong Kong.
But after reading some of my reviews of afternoon tea joints, my nephew sent me this:
I must admit that I’m a big fan of afternoon teas, and it was a big part of my life growing up having afternoon tea at my Grandma’s house. Anyhow, I’d never found a place that made the traditional scones, jam and cream that I’ve always been such a big fan of.
I was in Hong Kong a couple weeks ago, so I dragged my brother in law to the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. After waiting for over an hour to get a seat, the service was decent (but not spectacular), and I looked at the standard tray that everybody was getting and decided we could live without the dried sponges that Chinese bakers frequently called cakes. I just got the scones. Unlimited tea refills. No refills on the scones. A very pleasant afternoon, but at an astronomical price.
The two of us paid roughly $80 Canadian. I’d still have to call it an iconic place to have afternoon tea, and it was very plush, but probably not worth the money. ...
I’ve also had afternoon tea at Victoria peak (in Hong Kong on my last visit), and it was a little better, but even more expensive. One of the best parts of afternoon tea in Hong Kong is the feeling of the colonial days. Places like the Peninsula Hotel are relics of a bygone era of colonialism, so they need to be more English than England. I love to be surrounded by the pretentiousness. Feel free to post, but I wanted to add the Peninsula Hotel to your list of great places to have afternoon tea (if not good value).
Let me just add that tea at the places in Mayfair generally runs about $70 Cdn per person, so those prices in Hong Kong do not seem out of line for this sort of thing.
For my previous reviews of afternoon teas, please see these links (ranked in order of preference):
These two were superb. Highly recommended:
- The Four Seasons, London, England
- The St. Regis Hotel, Houston, Texas
- Claridge's, London, England
- The Dorchester, London, England
- Brown's, London, England
- The Pump Room, Bath
- The Boathouse, Guelph, Canada
- The Royal Crescent Hotel, Bath
- The Queen's Hotel, Portsmouth, England
Those in this next group were okay. I would consider returning to them:
These next two were judged unacceptable:
