Simply put: The Atkins Diet. From this article, cited earlier.
Now four months after giving birth, Kim has lost 43 pounds of the 50 she gained. She credits the Atkins diet for her rapid weight loss.
Over a year ago, Ms. Eclectic and I decided that standard calorie-counting or point-counting wasn't going to lead to lasting weight-loss. We'd done it, and we felt starved the entire time we were dieting, and (of course) we regained much of our lost weight. I once met a person who had become a lifetime member of Weight-watchers... twice... and regained her weight both times. It didn't seem like a lasting programme. Furthermore, my friend, Scoop, had done well on a super-low-carb diet, and I was open to the possibility.
So we went on our own versions of the Atkins diet. Our primary variations were that we drink scotch (no carbs) and wine (yes, carbs) quite frequently. And I have cereal maybe twice a month and pizza very infrequently. Ms. Eclectic is down probably more than 40 lbs and I'm down 10 lbs. When I eat way too many carbs, my weight goes up, but when I go back on Atkins, the weight goes back down quickly.
But the best part of the diet is that we are rarely, if ever hungry. We get to eat lots of fat; we get to eat lots of protein; and we bulk up on vegetables. My main struggle is that I don't much like most veggies, but I'm eating them more often.... many more veggies and much more often.Well, to be honest, my real struggle is that I like candy, ice cream, cakes, pies, etc. and I indulge in these things too often.
Here's the thing that got us onto that diet. We read a report that said the body burns more calories processing fat than it does processing the same caloric content of carbohydrates. And eating loads of fat doesn't increase your blood cholesterol. And, no, Atkins did not die of a heart attack.
I love the diet. We eat lots of meat and cheese. We have butter on our vegetables. We have whipped cream much more often than we used to. I'm rarely hungry.
If you're struggling with weight-loss, it's worth considering.
