This afternoon I was in a mystery show called "Death of a Salesman" playing the role of Willy Cheatham. The show begins with Willy giving a long introduction in which he tries to set up the audience so they will want to buy into his pyramid-selling scheme with Scamway Corporation.
I was about 3/4 of the way through this introduction when the hostess got very suspicious, and interrupted:
"I thought I hired a group to do a mystery show, not this financial sales thing..."
She seemed pretty concerned, disgusted, and maybe even more than a little upset, wondering if we had scammed her.
Willy (me) reassured her, "Don't worry. Believe me, you'll be very happy by the time the afternoon is over," which, of course didn't reassure her at all until I went to speak with her privately.
The opening scene obviously had her convinced. Clearly the script was good for that opening scene (and her reaction led me to believe it was one of my better acting performances, too).
